Recognizing Sleep Apnea Symptoms
Sleep apnea symptoms can be divided into two categories: those that occur during sleep and those experienced during waking hours. Many people are unaware they have sleep apnea because the most obvious symptoms occur while they're unconscious.
Nighttime Symptoms
- Loud, chronic snoring: Often the first sign noticed by bed partners
- Breathing interruptions: Pauses in breathing followed by gasping or choking
- Restless sleep: Frequent tossing and turning
- Night sweats: Excessive sweating during sleep
- Frequent urination: Waking up multiple times to use the bathroom
Daytime Symptoms
- Excessive sleepiness: Feeling tired despite a full night's sleep
- Morning headaches: Often described as a dull, aching sensation
- Difficulty concentrating: Problems with memory and focus
- Mood changes: Irritability, depression, or anxiety
- Dry mouth or sore throat: Upon waking
